Seasonal Phosphorus deficiency in Dairy Herds

In recent years DAFM Regional Veterinary Laboratories (RVLs) have seen a marked increase in the prevalence of phosphorus deficiency in dairy herds in April and May. Phosphorus deficiency in cattle is associated with weakness, decreased milk yield, infertility, haemoglobinuria and ‘pica’ or depraved appetite (a craving to lick / eat abnormal items such as stones). Blood samples are needed for a definitive diagnosis. Please contact your Veterinary practitioner for further information and investigation.
