Avian Influenza in Ireland

These viruses occur naturally among wild aquatic birds worldwide and can infect domestic poultry and other bird and animal species. Avian flu viruses do not normally infect humans. However, sporadic human infections with avian flu viruses have occurred. The H5N8 strain was confirmed in a number of birds in Northern Europe in November and December 2016. A case of H5N8 was diagnosed in late December in a widgeon in Co. Wexford. A second bird was subsequently diagnosed with Avian Influenza in Galway in 2016. So far 9 cases have been confirmed in 2017 in various counties in Ireland. To date no infection has been found in any domestic or commercial birds.
