African Swine Fever Update No.1 of 2025

Please find above the latest update from the NDCC regarding African Swine Fever.

African swine fever (ASF) continues to cause significant impacts on pig industries in affected countries across mainland Europe and worldwide.

 

  • In 2024 there were 8,845 outbreaks of ASF in domestic pigs (758) and wild boar (8087) reported across Europe.
    • Germany, Poland and Albania all reported their first ASF outbreaks during 2024.
  • In 2025 to date there have been ~5600 outbreaks of ASF reported.

 

  • Humans can play an important role in spreading ASF to new regions.
  • Food waste infected with the ASF virus consumed by pigs, represents the most significant risk pathway for a disease incursion into Ireland.

 

IT IS VITAL TO REMAIN VIGILANT FOR CLINICAL SIGNS OF AFRICAN SWINE FEVER

IT IS VITAL TO ENSURE BIOSECURITY MEASURES ARE IN PLACE TO PROTECT THE IRISH PIG INDUSTRY

 

ASF is a notifiable disease under National and European legislation.
