- Mandatory avian influenza biosecurity measures effective from 1st November 2025
- Biosecurity measures are mandatory for all poultry and captive bird keepers from 1st November 2025 with the introduction of the Avian Influenza (Biosecurity measures) Regulations 2025 to reduce the risk of an incursion of avian influenza to poultry in Ireland.
- There will not be a requirement for birds to be permanently housed from this date, nor will there be any restrictions on bird gatherings, shows or sales at this time.
- HPAI H5N1 has been confirmed in a captive bird establishment in Cork on 15.10.25.
- This HPAI outbreak in captive birds does not affect Ireland’s disease-free status from HPAI in poultry.
- HPAI outbreaks in domestic poultry have been reported in UK and Europe.
- Maintaining high biosecurity standards and registering with DAFM all poultry holdings: commercial farms or backyard flocks, is key to help protect poultry flocks and farmers’ livelihoods from the impacts which an outbreak of this disease would bring into Ireland.
