  • Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5N1 has been confirmed in two turkey flocks in recent days; one in Co. Carlow on 4th November 2025 and one in Co. Meath on 5th November 2025. This is the first time outbreaks of HPAI have been confirmed in poultry in Ireland since November 2022.
  • The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) of Northern Ireland has implemented temporary control zones in response to preliminary positive results for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza on two poultry premises in Pomeroy Co. Tyrone and in Lisnaskea Co. Fermanagh.
  • A Mandatory Housing Order for all poultry and captive birds, will take effect on Monday 10th November. These Regulations also include a ban on gatherings of birds from different premises to protect the birds from the risk of infection e.g. shows, fairs, sales.
  • The Mandatory Biosecurity Measures, currently in place are critical at this time to help protect Irish poultry and captive bird flocks against avian influenza (bird flu). The risk of occurrence of further outbreaks of the disease into poultry flocks in Ireland is high.
  • There has been a significant increase in HPAI outbreaks in domestic poultry and in wild birds in other parts of the UK and Europe in recent weeks.

BE VIGILANT FOR THE CLINICAL SIGNS OF AVIAN INFLUENZA IN YOUR FLOCK

Biosecurity is the single most effective way to prevent the virus spreading from wild birds into poultry or between poultry flocks.
