Avian Influenza Update No. 9 of 2025

Please find above Avian Influenza Update No. 9 of 2025 which includes updates on the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) situation in Ireland, Great Britain and Europe.

  • In the past three weeks, there have been a number of reports of groups of dead wild sea birds washing up on shorelines in counties Kerry, Clare and Galway.
  • 25 cases of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI H5N1, H5Nx) have been confirmed in wild birds in Ireland countrywide during January-June 2025.

* Poultry farmers in coastal areas, whether commercial or backyard, should implement stringent biosecurity measures to mitigate the risk of the disease spreading to their flocks*

*Biosecurity continues to remain the #1 method in disease prevention and control*

 

*Maintaining high biosecurity measures on farm, is key to protecting Ireland’s poultry industry from avian influenza and the serious consequences of an outbreak*

 

  • Members of the public are reminded not to touch sick or dead wild birds.

* Dead wild birds should be reported to DAFM using the Avian Influenza Wild Bird reporting App (AvianCheck).

  • Poultry keepers are reminded to remain vigilant for any suspicions of avian influenza in their flocks, and to report such suspicions to their Regional Veterinary Office or the National Disease Emergency Hotline 01 492 8026 without delay.
