NDCC Newcastle Disease Update No 2 of 2026

Please see NDCC Newcastle Disease Update No 2 of 2026 (pdf 425Kb)

  • Newcastle Disease (ND) continues to be reported in north and eastern Europe, mainly Poland and Germany, and in Spain in the south. The number of cases is high compared to previous years.
  • The outbreaks have occurred in vaccinated and unvaccinated flocks - No vaccine is 100% effective preventing infection, but they reduce morbidity, mortality, and viral shedding. Vaccination is recommended for commercial poultry.
  • The clinical picture for ND is similar for that of Avian Influenza, so laboratory testing is vital to confirm diagnosis.
  • ND virus is usually transmitted by direct contact with diseased or carrier poultry and wild birds or through contaminated material (food, water, equipment, clothing) - Strict biosecurity practices are vital to prevent disease

Biosecurity and vaccination are the best defence against a potential Newcastle Disease incursion
